I posted this in the news section on July 1, 2005, and thought it a good idea to hang on to it.

Happy birthday, Canada.

Yes indeed, today we turn 137 as a nation. We became a country on this day in 1867. It wasn't with guns and long, dawn-out battles. It was done with pen and paper, and the blessing of Queen Victoria.

As we celebrate with our family and friends today, it is easy to forget just how precious a place we live in. A place that has known very little of war on our doorstep. A place where we have the right to complain about those who make the decisions for us in Ottawa. A place where, if one gets sick, they have the RIGHT to free medical treatment. A place where we try, for the most part, to look after those who aren't able to look after themselves. A place that believes the rights of the person stand above all else. A place where each can worship from his own pew, without prejudice.

Those rights and freedoms that we all enjoy as canadians came at an incredible price. In both world wars, millions of young Canadians fought and died for those freedoms. It is easy to forget that in our busy lives, but it is something that must be remembered, and NOT taken for granted.

We give thanks to those individuals on November 11, but I think it's something to think about today as well.
The Maple Leaf, our emblem dear,
The Maple Leaf Forever!
God save our Queen, and heaven bless,
The Maple Leaf Forever!

(Chorus from "The Maple Leaf Forever", Alexander Muir, 1867)
